The Power of EMOM Compels You!

It was back to The Lloyds for Totally Wired #4 last Thursday, to do battle with once more with the unquiet ghost of Martin Hannett. Maybe he was bored tormenting the performers, or maybe there was a priest in the audience, but the new PA was superb, and it was good and loud!

First to the tables was PP Roy with his unique blend of beats and 60s lounge music. This guy must have one heck of a record collection. I get a chilled St Etienne vibe from his work. See what you think...


We were up next and after discovering that we could play for longer than planned, the set list became somewhat casual. Being behind the speakers wasn't the best for recording sound, but it went down OK on the night.

 

Rollmopski took to the stage next, with their unique blend of Prophet 5, modular, Theremin and slide guitar creating a sound that was in turn bouncy and plaintive.

 

Next, we were in for an interactive treat courtesy of Thunkist and his special paddles containing smartwatches, which transmit information about their position, angle, movement and so on back to Ableton to enable audience members to interact with and influence the way a song evolves. People had a great time, as you can see!

 

And finally, bringing the evening to a thunderous end was Frostwize with his post-apocalyptic rave sound. I've personally never seen so much kit onstage for an EMOM performance. 

Totally Wired is taking a short break now, but once the renovations at The Lloyds are complete, it will return with lights, projections, and a thunderous new PA upstairs in the new dedicated gig space. Exciting times lay ahead!

And So It Begins...Or, where it all went wrong.

 The mercury was already well below zero as dusk descended to draw an end to November 2023. After loading up the gig bag with laptop and power supply (very important), audio interface, keyboard, mixer, collapsable metal stands, USB hub and various spare cables just in case, we trudged up the hill to the train station, reflecting on lines from "Fool's Gold" about aching backs and knifelike straps.  Venturing into Manchester city centre promises a multitude of architectural delights, blending ornate Victorian civic pride with the cutting edge. In the Loop...

It's a long way to Shrewsbury by car from Darkest Cheshire, but armed with Marjorie the satnav, a splendid sunny morning, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin on Spotify (first two albums on shuffle and repeat, lovely), it was plain sailing right until I hit the outskirts of the town. Being an ancient market town built on a loop in the River Severn, access by car is limited to a single road down past the railway station. It took about half an hour to travel the final mile or so. The event itself had been moved at short notice from Albert & Co, which has an intimate, friendly vibe, to Albert's Shed, which is a much larger venue by EMOM or any other standards. I estimate you could get 200+ people in there and still have space to dance. So, obviously, on a glorious Saturday afternoon when most people would be out and about, it was going to be a struggle to get an audience, but no matter!
