Spacenoodle Is Back!

 

Right in the heart of Chorlton's wealthy and bustling Wilbram Road, Dulcimer Bar is a trendy drinkery with an eccelectic cliantele and, more importantly, a fully equipped venue upstairs complete with bar and all the sound gear an EMOM night could want, including a selection of active DI boxes. 

Yes, after a short hiatus to find a new venue, Spacenoodle is back! A short walk from the excellent Totally Wired night at The Lloyds (which returns early in 2025 when the new upstairs venue is finished), these two nights will perfectly bookend the main strip through Chorlton.

This was a slightly subdued, almost soft relaunch to the mighty nights that used to happen at the cavernous NIAMOS Centre in Hulme. The inestimable Heaton Norris Light Vessel Automatic had to pull out at the last momennt so there were only three of us to grace the stage that night. This was a pity, because his sound is sublime and deeply emotional.

First up was Mythical Brewery, delivering their trademark semi-improvised laid-back beats, guitar and vocals.


AfroLektronic was up next with his unique blend of house, acid and afrobeats. An infectious blend of styles. 


And finally, Libby and I took to the stage. Though the audience was small, everyone still managed to have good time.


And so ended the low-key relaunch to the revitalised Spacenoodle. Dulcimer is a good venue with good sound and ample parking at the nearby (and empty) Square Shopping Centre. The night just needs acts and an audience, and then it's go for throttle up, as they say in space circles.

In the Loop...

It's a long way to Shrewsbury by car from Darkest Cheshire, but armed with Marjorie the satnav, a splendid sunny morning, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin on Spotify (first two albums on shuffle and repeat, lovely), it was plain sailing right until I hit the outskirts of the town. Being an ancient market town built on a loop in the River Severn, access by car is limited to a single road down past the railway station. It took about half an hour to travel the final mile or so. The event itself had been moved at short notice from Albert & Co, which has an intimate, friendly vibe, to Albert's Shed, which is a much larger venue by EMOM or any other standards. I estimate you could get 200+ people in there and still have space to dance. So, obviously, on a glorious Saturday afternoon when most people would be out and about, it was going to be a struggle to get an audience, but no matter! Salve Derventio! Esne paratus saxum?

Lying in a big hotel bed in Derby at 7:45am on Friday 16th February 2024, if someone had told me a year ago that last night I'd have been playing live electronic music, my electronic music, very loudly to a roomful of people who clapped and cheered at the end, I'd have told them they were crazy. That I'd even have anything I'd be less than terrified to let people hear seems crazy. And yet, here we are: Libby and all the gear is packed neatly in the rucksack ready to go, I'm promising myself I'll only have one sausage at the Premier Inn breakfast I'm about to devour downstairs.
